(Column-ish cross-post from the babble forums on Rabble.ca (thread). I'm not quite sure at what I was aiming here but I think I did a good job. I think there are still holes to poke through (I might be a somewhat overenthusiastic about personal qualities) but that's why I'm posting it to Rabble, so that people can pick it apart.)

Even if it's not an elected position, and that the position itself is a token, it's bloody amazing. We're the first white-dominated country to have a black head of state, a black woman that comes from the country that won the first independence struggle against colonial rulers in the Americas. (The United States don't count; the religious fundamentalist insurgents there were the colonizers themselves.) I think this is an important milestone.

Found at the end of the NDP press release congratulating Michaëlle Jean's nomination:

Two things. The new century has started 4 years ago, and Adrienne Clarkson has been in post all that time. Secondly, what the hell does having family make you more or less fitting to be a governor general? Is Layton thinking of making the position a hereditary one, like the Queen?

I bet you they have a list of keywords at Huron Street that they try to plug in as many press releases as possible, and that "families" is one of them.
