Public letter on Ivan Drury’s resignation from Fire This Time
"My name is Ivan Drury. I’m writing this letter to inform the left and progressive community that I have broken with Fire This Time, MAWO, and all other related groups. Through this letter I also hope to begin to stand accountable for the many irresponsible and destructive things I am responsible for having done when I was a member of these groups."
I knew (not personally, but de visu) Ivan from the hardcore scene when I was living in Vancouver, BC in 1998-2000, and at the time I thought he seemed like a "good guy" who was quite intense. Then he became part of the
Anti-Poverty Committee, which seemed (to me) to try to emulate what
OCAP had done in Toronto, including squatting the
Woodward's building. Ivan and a bunch of others eventually splintered from the APC to form Fire This Time, and this is where the story of this public letter begins. It describes the shenanigans of this mad vanguardist personality cult and its effects on the Vancouver anti-war movement in particular, on the activist left in Vancouver in general, but most importantly the psychological and physical abuse meted on anyone deemed an "opponent", or even on members exhibiting petit bourgeois behaviour, such as loving their parents or their girlfriend. Read the comments on the letter, read the whole blog if you got time. If you know anyone involved in a leftist personality cult (!!), send them this letter, it could open up their eyes.

Fire This Time and Ali Yerevani are still active.
