Also I think that some of the actors are bad at lipsyncing, even if it's over their own singing. I mean they don't have much time to practice and they're not songs they'll ever sing again, but it's something that really bugs me! Or maybe they recorded the episode before recording the audio that they dubbed on later, so there was no chance at syncing.

Also, come on, what a missed opportunity to have Klingons sing black metal!!!

THANK YOU. Everyone is fucking in love with it and I thought it was cringe. Almost every song was just someone alone in a room singing about how sad they were, which is not structurally what makes a musical interesting. All of the songs are forgettable. Klingons would not feel dishonour about singing.

WHAT? Klingons love singing? Like every Klingon episode is kind of a musical episode because there is at least one song. (eta: actually that would be a good joke - it's a musical episode but the Klingons don't notice because they just sing whenever they feel like it anyway)

(also I see the black metal argument, but also it would have been cool to get like an actual opera singer to do Klingon opera)

I said on FB that the musical episode felt like it was written by ChatGPT. Musicals have a certain structure to them; this had a different structure that I'm pretty sure could be generated by typing the words "star trek musical" into the LLM. The resolution was classic ChatGPT—"we can overcome all obstacles as long as we work together" while the episode itself was devoid of both Star Trek in-jokes (Klingon opera, the fact that both Spock and Uhura have musical talent, even something like a redshirt or two dying could have been good) and memorable lyrics.

The Red Shirt's Lament could be a really funny patter song, especially if they had someone gifted w/ physical comedy.

Yeah I like your ChatGPT comparison, I think it's apt. Personally I also felt I was listening to Céline Dion almost the whole time. Ugh.

Anyway. It's Trek. I think this episode feels like it sucks more because they've raised the bar so much with this series. :)
