You might have noticed that India just had elections, with Congress winning a stunning victory and quickly forming a coalition, with Mayawati's BSP (Dalit Party) joining Congress even though it was part of the Third Front (communist coalition) until election day.
One thing I hadn't noticed until now: "Manmohan Singh is the first prime minister to be re-elected after serving a full first term since Jawaharlal Nehru in 1961." That's not just re-elected, but re-elected with stronger numbers, Congress being just 10% short of a simple majority. This is quite a feat. Before being Prime Minister, Singh was finance minister in 1991 to 1996, where he engineered much of the liberalization of India's economy, putting an end to the License Raj which had stifled the economy.
