Mad as hell! Although isn't it generous of him to assume that the race-baiting was some advisor's idea rather than her own preferred tactic?

But yeah, it's generous. He's definitely framed it in the "don't get bogged down by your people, you're better than that". In a way, he's doing what he's asking her to do, which is to not tar the candidates themselves, so you could say that he is consequent with himself. He's attacking the message, not the messenger.
