One big benefit of this design is that the windmill is slow, slower than the wind, so birds don't get caught in it. It also means that it's silent.

Slower than the wind? I'd like to know how this thing works generating power. Looks pretty high-tech.

The article talks about how the first version, Darius, just crushed its ball bearings. This new version uses water to support the load and facilitate rotation rather than ball bearings.
