A more compelling case than animal rights ethics for vegetarianism: So You're an Environmentalist; Why Are You Still Eating Meat?

I've posted on tabnet about these types of arguments before, but it's good to read more about it...

In his book The Food Revolution, author John Robbins estimates that "you'd save more water by not eating a pound of California beef than you would by not showering for an entire year." Because of deforestation to create grazing land, each vegetarian saves an acre of trees per year.

I wish there were more references, but it sounds credible anyway.

Oh yeah, another interesting tidbit:
Women are more likely to be vegetarians than men; and -- surprisingly -- Republicans are slightly more likely to abstain from meat than Democrats.

Even though I grew up in a meat-eating, fishing, hunting and trapping household, and my mother eventually turned into a butcher, I never liked meat ever. So of course it's easier for me to be veg.

Finding "driving fun" wouldn't be a good enough reason on its own to prefer cars over public transit where the infrastructure is available, either.

On the other hand, I'm not sure I should protest when someone's showing me their teeth.

i was kind of only joking, i really dont eat that much meat, and when i do its usually wild salmon in the form of sashimi. i do like meat though. i just dont like to prepare it at home and im wary of no-organic!

i was a vegetarian for about 4 years and a vegan for a few months in highschool, but it was more of a weird food control thing for me than anything else i think. in the end it was mostly about bing disgusted by the way the meat industry treats animals (and it's own patrons really) with contempt.

but yeah, i was raised in the same kind of environment, where we would have freezers full of vemicin and moosemeat. in the summer, fresh pickerel. i dont have a problem with this type of meat-eating environment, but i am generally appalled by the meat industry.
