I like playing Devil's Advocate too much. I should take care of my zine distro instead of arguing both for and against protesting at York. On the same mailing list, to boot.
Another thing that I often do, but thankfully refrained from doing in that thread, is to willfully say something that I know is wrong so that my interlocutor corrects me. The point is that while I know something is wrong, I'm not quite sure what the "right" version is, so by putting out a wrong thesis, I am answered with the thesis I am looking for.
While it's an interesting way of conducting dialogue, I think I should stop using this tactic because it makes me look less knowledgeable than I actually am.
Wow, that beats what I did. I was e-scolding people in yorku for criticizing the protestors when kids their age are dying in Iraq, but I saved my tirades against many of the protestors (as individuals) for dinner this evening.
