Weirdly, I was just describing the hilarity of there being straight Black Sails fans to a friend, and now I need to know whether it's specifically called the Straight Black Sails group.
Haha no it's not. :) It's the Black Sails Fan Group (Talking Black Sails Podcast). The podcast itself seems to be defunct, unlike Fathoms Deep, which is still sometimes pushing some new episodes. (I like it so much that I'm contributing to their Patreon, even though it seems like a podcast in the sunset of its life! but I'm enjoying it now, so...)
Like all things straight and white, the SBSG does not know itself.
The other day someone posted a picture of the moment when Anne said "I can't be your wife, Jack" and people were just Not Groking That Text, according to their comments. Their brains just freeze when the teh gay happens and thaw back out when Charles Vane gets back on the screen.
I suppose there is something interesting to say about nationalism and imperialism here? Like, historically, if you want to break up with an empire, you usually end up relying on some kind of nationalist movement (and the question of whether you could take another path out seems to be at the heart of what Black Sails is working through). But then nationalism is, itself, what provides the ideological fodder (and financial incentive) for empire. So you get this situation where Americans feel like stories of resistance to colonial oppression resonate with our founding national myths - despite our country's own imperialistic actions.

I can see that, but how could I skip the opportunity to mock dumb fans of the show? :P
I also added a couple links to the two Barbary Wars that the US has fought against pirates, but since that's not part of the Black Sails canon that's just been ignored so far. X) I guess I should take comfort that it wasn't a Confederate flag...
