At the end of season 1, when Flint has been deposed and both he and Silver will be dumped by the time they reach Nassau, Flint tells Dufresne "Don't go to the Kingston route, your crew is not ready to take a prize." Dufresne falls for this reverse psychology, and goes for the first prize they meet. It goes tits up, many men die, and at some point they are clearly losing the battle. Flint and others tell Dufresne to disengage, but he is too shocked to do anything. After 30 seconds, Flint issues an order, everyone stares at him, but eventually they fall in line, effectively giving him command. Afterwards, the crew has a vote and re-elect Flint captain, 17 to 15. Flint comes to the cabin to tell Dufresne the results, which the latter expected. And then he realizes that Flint played him, and ponders all the men that died in this failed prize capture, just so Flint could regain the captaincy.
The first time I watched it I thought it was clever of Flint, but on rewatch I'm split. I can't believe Hal Gates was killed so early in the show!! Please bring daddy back.*
*: My previous manager was very much Hal Gates. :)
