frandroid: (punk)

North America's first international scholarly conference on punk will be held at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada, on April 24-26, 2008.

So, punk IS dead after all.

THE PUNK ARCHIVE: Special Collections, in SFU's Bennett Library, is beginning to assemble material for the world's first punk archive.

Seriously? I don't believe it.

i was hoping they'd be far along enough in the planning process that i'd be able to see a schedule, just to see how this is gonna go.

the idea of a 'punk archive' - like a zine archive - is something that pleases the obsessive hoarder in me, but you're right, it has the sound of a bit of a death knell.

I find it preposterous that they would be the "first" one. Maybe the first institutional one, but I'm sure there are a bunch of smaller archives around...

Punk archives...

i was debating on sending this to the goodwill the other day, and then was thinking 'but what if i want to walk around and listen to my tapes? can you even buy a new tape walkman anymore?'

Well, even if you could buy a new walkman, you wouldn't want to shell out for such a thing anyway... So might as well keep that one! I have three here that are pretty useless, but that I keep "just in case". Eeek!

Does anyone else find it ironic that this conference is held at SFU?

Sorry. I'm dyslexic.

The violent hardcore gang is FSU.

It's totally not funny this way. :(

This might be interesting. I took some undergrad classes with the conference organizer, Paul Budra, many years ago. His lectures were entertaining, to say the least -- framing Hamlet as a prototypical goth, for example -- and I can just picture him as a young punk enthusiast before the academics reigned him in.

Maybe he's still punk, but he doesn't bring that fully to class. :]
