I think for Rae to face Layton would burnish his credentials, a final catharsis to accept him into the party. And even though Layton won by a larger margin last time, it's not a safe riding at all. Running a Trudeau constitutionalist last time was a good idea, and she did well in spite of little actually earned personal profile, so someone of Rae's stature could do it. I mean, I think toppling Layton is a very achievable goal for the Liberals, they just have to find the right person.
On the flipside, if Rae loses, that would be a kind of honorable way for him to go, not glorious but not infamous either. I mean I think he doesn't really want to be a second-fiddle in the Liberal Cabinet, unless he thinks Dion will go quickly.
