There are big anti-multiculturalism rumblings in Québec right now. There have been a series of "unreasonable accomodation" episodes recently which have rattled public opinion on the place of immigrants in Québec society.

During my vacation, I had an encounter with a woman who liked the idea of workfare, favoured some pretty intense restrictions on prisoners (as if being in prison is a vacation!) and in killing off mentally ill people. I was glad to learn that she was spoiling her ballot rather than voting for the MPs they've elected in Québec City last January (hint: their party leader muzzles them), but really, that brought little relief.

Conservative talk radio hosts ruled something fierce in Québec City in recent years... One (Jeff Fillion) went too far and was eventually got taken off the air in spite of being part-owner of the station (defamation lawsuits do cost a bunch), but the other one (André Arthur), who had also been sidelined by his station, was elected to parliament as well, as one of the currently two independent MPs. Now that Wajid Khan has passed to the Conservatives, he might become an important vote in Parliament, so keep an eye on him. But bank on him voting with Conservatives. Another guy (can't remember his name) had a show on TV and was sacked in December, so this is also good news.
