Anatomie d’une chute review
May. 14th, 2024 01:04 pmAnatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet. Palme d'or winner at Cannes, nominated for the best film Oscar, winner of the Oscar for best script.
A man falls to his death while renovating his country home. Was it accidental? Did he kill himself? Did she push him down? Theirs was a relationship where they fought a lot, so the French court prosecutes on the assumption that she did it.
As the audience, we have no idea what actually happened, and this courtroom drama combines the layers as the accused hides, obfuscates, forgets, reframes. Their blind son is a key witness to the moments before the death. The court and the defense both make strong points which balance each other out. So what happened?
This was a really phenomenal script. Well acted, well directed, but wow, this is where you see the power of good writing.
5 stars, no notes, must watch.
