One year before being elected for the first time to the House of Commons, Joe Clark was at a Liberal association meeting in his riding, looking on as the sitting MP was being endorsed. Clark, who was there with Peter Newman, confided to the latter:
"There is only one proper way for a conservative to get in the HoC: by taking down a liberal." And he did.
