frandroidHoly mother of god. India's government has introduced a landmark bill aimed at guaranteeing 100 days of employment each year to every rural household.
One member from each of India's 60m rural households will earn a minimum daily wage of 60 rupees (£0.76). [via bbc]
India, which already had the world's largest affirmative action programme (reservation policy, enshrined in the constitution), will now have the world's largest social welfare program. Or maybe I should call it a workfare program, but I think that's a hugely positive advancement either way.
I'm excluding China from "world's largest", due to its communist model, where the whole society is a welfare program, but then again, looking at the poverty in rural China, it's not like the world is rosy out there, far from it.
