If the Democrats had a Karl Rove (did Saul Alinsky have descendants?), she would make sure some Democratic Party militants went to work for Tea Party candidates during Republican nominations. This is such a humongous windfall for the Democrats, it's not even funny...  All that's left is a Sarah Palin nomination and Obama is set for a solid victory in the house. How many incumbent Republican senators can these kooks unseat?

For similar Canadian examples, I think we need to look at Stockwell Day's victory as Alliance leader, and AndrĂ© Boisclair's victory as PQ leader.  Popular with the unpopular fringe of their parties, and then total flame-outs during an election, unable to capture the centre. (In Boisclair's case, the "centre" was not between left and right, but between separatist and federalist.) But even then, that doesn't quite capture what this is turning out to be. Maybe we need to go back to the days of the Waffle before it got kicked out of the NDP.

But there's still Mike Harris...  Hmmm.
