The site of the week on Rabble.ca is rawa.org, the Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan. This brings back memories. In the wake of 11 September, I was reading a lot of Znet, stuff in the lead up to the Afghan war, and eventually I came upon RAWA's site. I thought that they were really cool, so I made their logo my desktop wallpaper on my work computer at MSN. The funny thing is that my desk was right by the door, which is an annoying desk to have because you have to get up and answer the door when the receptionist wasn't there, but it's also a cool desk because you can totally propagandize your office with your desktop wallpaper. Anyway, to make a long story short, people saw the word "revolutionary" with some arabic text, and I was promptly called into a meeting with my manager where I was told that this was inappropriate, and that I had to take it down. Even though this was the logo of the foremost feminist organization in the country everyone was bashing at the time for its poor treatment of women, and "burqa" was the buzzword of the moment, this was of no concern to my manager.

Later on, I was called to another meeting due to my "offensive" anti-war, but mostly pro-peace Messenger handles.

This is the same manager that gave us the day off on 11 September because Toronto could be a target, and we were "close" to the CN Tower. I thought this was bullshit (there wasn't a single skyscraper that could have touched our building even if it fell timber-style, as opposed to collapsing on itself like the WTC towers) but obviously I didn't stick around the office.
