Racist hate machine
Palin hasn't yet quite turned on the racist hatred yet (she's promising to talk more about Rev. Wright soon though), but her supporters know a fellow hate-mongerer when they see one... Read through Richard Hétu's round-up, or if you don't understand French, just click on the links in the text, which send back to American media articles... "Taitor!" "Terrorist!" "Kill him!" are some of the reactions from Republican crowds to statements by Palin & McCain questioning Obama's character.

I don't know about that. There's some serious subtextual stuff going on when she uses lines about "people like us."

I have had, for about a year now, this growing (and, I hope, irrational) fear that Obama might win the election, only to be murdered shortly thereafter (or therebefore, even) by some racist fuck who can't abide the idea of a black, or perceived Muslim, president, and is spurred to action by nonsense precisely of the type described here.
The shitstorm that would ensue scares the crap out of me.

No kidding. It took this town 30 years to recover from riots the last time the prominent black leader of his generation got assassinated.
That being said, Obama's not being guarded by rent-a-cops borrowed from his local 7-Eleven.

Hopefully, should that happen, rioters would avoid their own neighbourhoods. Michael Moore (somewhat condescending but still funny) drew a map from South Central L.A. to Beverley Hills in a book published in the mid-90s, indicating where black people should have gone to riot following the Rodney King trial verdict.
I'm about to make a post that follows up on your fears...
