How Barack Obama learned to love Israel

Obama's unabashed support for Israel is not news to me, but how recent his conversion was, is. What's interesting is how little flack Obama has gotten for this. Not in the mainstream media of course, but even in more progressive circles. (I think it's the first mention of it in this LJ.)

I think this is an example of how social change cannot only happen through electoral means, no matter how good the people elected can are. Electoral movements without social movements always lead to dismaying results. The current Obama wave is lacking a social movement to give the candidate a backbone.

The converse is true as well. The pro-Tibet movement, which could maintain a certain momentum this year, lacks a political champion and will not go anywhere. That's in spite of the general sinophobia vibe that was only prevented from taking off by the distraction offered by September 11.
