Five days after Kanshi Ram's death, and 50 years after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's conversion to Buddhism (along with 380,000 other people), thousands of dalits are congregating at Nagpur to convert away from hinduism, and hopefully but not necessarily away from caste. This is a far cry from the speculated 20 million that Ram had wanted to convert on this anniversary.

What is the future of the Dalit movement now, and especially neo-buddhism?

Yeah, that probably doesn't help. But from what I can read, I think that the movement might be stifled at this point. Of course, Kanshi Ram's big goal of converting 20 million people was huh... pretty ambitious, but the interesting idea was that the movement would go beyond dalits to reach out to other castes. Mayawati has started doing that, but she's a politician first and foremost...
